The Herald of Blood Loop: Bleed + Bursting Plague
Herald of Blood + Poison + Bursting Plague + Bleed is an early-game pack-clear loop that keeps detonating after the first kill. An enemy dies with Blood Loss, Herald of Blood explodes, that explosion poisons nearby enemies, they die and Plague Burst, that burst reapplies bleed, and Herald fires again. In a dense pack the chain runs until nothing is left. You can start assembling it in Act 1 and complete it in Act 2 when Tier 2 supports drop. Fire builds and casters can steal the same loop with one unique each.
How the Loop Works
- You inflict Bleed / Blood Loss with a hit that includes physical damage (or fire damage if you use Blistering Bond).
- That enemy dies while it has Blood Loss.
- Herald of Blood (or Herald of the Royal Queen from Atziri’s Acuity) explodes. The explosion is a physical attack that cannot be evaded. Damage is not based on your weapon; it uses a portion of the dead enemy’s accumulated Blood Loss plus a small base hit. Radius is about 1.5m. Normal and magic corpses are destroyed. It also has a chance to Aggravate Bleeding.
- Poison support on the Herald gives the explosion a chance to poison surrounding enemies.
- A poisoned enemy dies and Bursting Plague triggers. Plague builds from the poison (up to a cap based on the enemy’s life). The burst deals physical damage equal to the plague stored, with extra area as plague grows. Radius is about 1.8m. youtube.com
- Bleed support on the same Herald lets that Plague Burst inflict bleed on nearby enemies.
- Those bleeds create new Blood Loss deaths, which fire Herald again.
Once the first corpse pops, you usually do not need another button for the rest of the pack.
Core Setup (Martial Weapons)Herald of Blood is a Spirit gem. Reservation is 30 Spirit. It requires a martial weapon: axe, bow, claw, crossbow, dagger, flail, mace, quarterstaff, spear, sword, or talisman. You cannot socket it on a pure caster without a workaround.
First Spirit gem comes from the Act 1 Freythorn quest (King of the Mists) — 30 Spirit plus a Level 4 Uncut Spirit Gem. Engrave Herald of Blood.Socket these three supports into Herald of Blood:
| Support | When you get it | What it does in this loop |
|---|---|---|
| Poison (I–III) | Uncut Support Gem Level 1 (Act 1) | Chance to poison on Herald hits (40% / 60% / 60% + extra poison magnitude vs bleeding enemies at higher tiers) |
| Bursting Plague | Uncut Support Gem Level 2 (Act 2) | Poisoned enemies gain Plague and explode on death for physical damage based on stored Plague |
| Bleed I–III | Level 1 support | Chance to inflict bleed (50% / 75% / 100%). This is what restarts Herald |
Do not use Bleed IV. Bleed IV cannot inflict bleed; it only adds more melee physical to already-bleeding targets and Incision. That breaks the loop.
If you cannot find an early support, Bramblegast in the Graveyard area can drop one on the first kill. You still need a way to apply the first bleed. Herald itself is a payoff skill and does not start Blood Loss. Use any physical-hitting skill with bleed chance, or gain extra physical on an elemental skill so bleed can proc.
Caster and Shield Version: Atziri’s AcuityHerald of Blood is martial-only. Atziri’s Acuity (Moulded Mitts, Level 33) grants Herald of the Royal Queen — the same “kill with Blood Loss → bloody explosion based on accumulated Blood Loss” effect. You socket Poison, Bursting Plague, and Bleed on that granted Herald exactly as you would on Herald of Blood. This is how spell and shield characters run the loop. The video also notes it feels very strong on shield setups.
Atziri’s Acuity also has:
- (150–200)% increased Armour
- +(100–150) maximum Life
- Leech 10% of Physical Attack Damage as Life
- 10% of Physical damage from your Hits causes Blood Loss
- Vaal Pact (you cannot recover life except from leech)
Vaal Pact is the tax. Build leech (the gloves already give physical-attack leech) or you will not heal from flasks, regen, or most other sources. The 10% of hit physical as Blood Loss helps seed the first explosion even if your main skill is not a dedicated bleed skill.
Gloves are Level 33, so this comes online mid-campaign rather than Act 1.
Fire Builds: Blistering Bond
Bleed normally needs physical hit damage. Pure fire skills will not start the loop unless you add extra physical.Blistering Bond (Ruby Ring, Level 8) changes that:
- Fire damage also contributes to Bleeding magnitude
- Bleeding you inflict deals Fire damage instead of Physical
- You take Fire damage instead of Physical from Bleeding on you
Your fire hits can build bleed magnitude. Those bleeds (and the Herald explosions that follow) deal fire. Fire scaling then feeds both ignite-style numbers and the chain. The ring is an early unique and is the cleanest way for fire characters to use the same Herald package.
Caveat: if you leech from physical bleed or from physical Herald hits, converting bleed to fire can cut that leech off. Combined with Vaal Pact on Atziri’s Acuity, this can leave you with no recovery. Do not stack both conversions unless you have another reliable leech source that still works. If you stay physical, a “gain % of damage as extra physical” node also lets an elemental skill inflict bleed without the ring.
Limits
- Martial weapon requirement unless you use Atziri’s Acuity.
- Vaal Pact on the gloves forces a leech-only life plan.
- Blistering Bond can delete physical-bleed leech.
- Bleed IV, missing Poison, or missing Bursting Plague will stop the self-chain.
- Single-target bosses need a real bleed applicator; the loop is for clear, not a boss killer by itself.
This is a staple clear engine rather than a full build. Drop it on almost any physical or fire-hit character that can seed one bleed, then let packs delete themselves.
